The house

The townhouse was built in the 1760s, when Santo Domingo had already been a city for two and a half centuries. It is laid out the way Caribbean houses were before machines cooled the air: thick masonry walls, high ceilings, and every room opening onto a covered outdoor gallery so the sea breeze does the work. The third floor — the whole of it — is the Pallazzo. The renovation kept the bones and the terracotta and added what a modern guest actually needs: three full bathrooms, air conditioning in every bedroom, fast wifi, and a kitchen you can genuinely cook in.

The name

Pallazzo is our spelling and our joke that is not entirely a joke — palazzo is what Italians call a grand house, and this one earned the extra letter. The style inside is Spanish colonial with Caribbean nerve: cobalt blue, terracotta, palm green, and sun through wooden shutters.
